Applying for Benefits


When applying for VA education benefits, please allow eight to ten weeks for processing. The amount of benefits you will receive is determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs and is based on the number of credit hours for which you are enrolled. Please submit all completed applications and supporting documents to the Veterans Services Office.


New Students


If you have never used VA education benefits at any institution of higher education, you must complete the appropriate application form.


  • Active Duty GI Bill (Chapter 30)

  • VEAP (Chapter 32)

  • Reservists and Guard members (Chapter 1606)

  • Activated Reservists and Guard members (Chapter 1607)


Note: Guard and Reserve members activated under Title 10 U.S.C. and who have served on active duty continuously for 24 months may qualify for Chapter 30 Active Duty benefits.

  • Survivors and Dependents (Chapter 35)

Please complete Form 22-5490 (Download this form)

In addition, you may be required to provide one or more of the following documents:


  • Certified DD Form 214: Veteran coming off Active Duty (Chapters 30 and 1607 only)

  • DD Form 2384: Notice of Basic Eligibility (Chapter 1606 only)

  • Letter of Eligibility (Chapter 35 –Activated by the VA after Form 22-5490 is processed)


If you are a Survivor or Dependent who is eligible for CHAMPVA, you may need to complete Form 10-10d (Download this form). For more information please refer to the CHAMPVA web site.



Submitting Your Application Online


If you prefer, you can submit an electronic copy of Form 22-1990 or Form 22-5490 directly to the Department of Veterans Affairs using the online VONAPP application (link to VONAPP). Please note that you will be required to send your signature to the VA by postal mail if you select this option.


Transfer Students


If you collected GI Bill benefits at another institution, you must complete one of the following forms to change the University of Arizona to your parent institution.


  • Form 22-1995, if you are receiving benefits through Chapters 30, 32, 1606 or 1607 (Download this form)

  • Form 22-5495, if you are receiving benefits through Chapter 35 (Download this form)


Previous college credit, including military credit, must be evaluated by an academic advisor and annotated on the Credit Evaluation form.


Certifying and Verifying Your Enrollment

To prevent delays in receiving your education benefits, you must certify your enrollment prior to the beginning of each semester or summer session. Please return to the Veterans Services Office each semester to complete Form 22-1999.


In addition, if you are receiving education benefits under Chapter 30 or Chapter 1606 you must verify your continuing enrollment monthly. This can be done online at https://www.gibill.va.gov/wave/ or you can call 1 (877) 823-2378. Please note that monthly verification cannot be completed any earlier than the last day of each month.
